Since its release in the spring of 2017, the Nintendo Switch has taken the gaming community by storm. A unique hybrid of traditional console and portable gaming unit, the Switch offers an experience unlike any other for gamers.
The “good” news is that there aren’t many games worth buying at the launch of the Switch. The one game everyone will be talking about, “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,” is a true delight. It’s also $60.
This has caused some retailers to try new things when selling the system. Amazon briefly had the systems but only for Prime subscribers. There are also many new accounts in the third-party seller section with no feedback that are selling the system for far below market cost. Stay far away from these. The price seems to start around $400 for legit third-party offerings; look for sellers with a long history of positive feedback.
Looking for a cheap Nintendo Switch with at least one game? We’ve seen this bundle for less, but if the other bundles sell out, then this is a decent alternative, especially as Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle is still quite new. This is available with the red/blue edition of the Nintendo Switch at Currys.
The system has been out of stock for some time when it comes to pre-orders, but companies like Nintendo love that photo op with long lines of smiling fans waiting for their chance to buy the hardware, and we already know that some of the launch units are being held back for walk-in customers on the day of release.
Teenage friends get together on a deserted island and, unsurprisingly, things get weird in this spooky, well-written adventure. Oxenfree isn’t a gruesome or stressful horror game, more a twisty supernatural yarn. Witty, believable dialogue reveals all the complex rivalries and secret desires that you’d expect from a group of small-town kids.
If challenging run-and-jump games aren’t your thing, Celeste might just win you over anyway. Otherworldly and endearing, Celeste follows a pixel-art character on a journey up a mountain, encouraging you through its fiendish, treacherous areas with affirmations and optimism. A tough game with an uplifting message: don’t let the voice inside your head tell you that you can’t do things.
A great co-op title you can grab physically or download digitally from the Nintendo eShop. Up to four players can play locally on one TV to serve up tasty orders across a range of kitchens, each with its own set of obstacles. It may even inspire you to ditch the Pot Noodles in favour of some home-cooked grub IRL.
So far, all we know is that Yoshi will be back into action in a new platforming title exclusively for the Nintendo Switch. Visually, the video game looks to take some cues from the Paper Mario franchise but instead is focused on more construction-grade paper. For now, we’ll simply have to wait and see just what Nintendo has in-store.
A tough as nails 2D platformer about living with anxiety, Celeste might not scream ‘fun’ in the same way Super Mario Odyssey does but this charming tale about climbing a mountain aboslutely ranks as a Nintendo Switch essential. The key is in its simplicity with each level being divided into bite-sized chunks that you’ll fail at over and over until finding your way across a seemingly insurmountable crevasse. The further towards the summit, the more challenging things get and the more powers you’ll amass to help you acheive the seemingly impossible.
Like the title says, never have been in stock online or in store. Always out of stock. Been just over 2 months and can’t even purchase one…that’s sad that people have to wait for probably over 2 months because not many are brought in with each shipment smh
Ubisoft’s Rabbids come toe-to-toe with Luigi, Peach and Yoshi in this turn-based title. Take a team of three through the Mushroom Kingdom and beat back the Rabbid invasion. This game takes familiar faces, mixes in some Rabbid-flavoured chaos and wraps it all up in XCOM-style gameplay that’ll have even hardened gamers hooked. Balance weapons, tactics, special abilities and status effects. Earn coins and skill orbs to upgrade your kit and build an unbeatable team.
Built from the ground up specifically for the Nintendo Switch, FIFA 18 provides an immersive gaming experience with a high definition presentation. Players have multiple gameplay options, allowing for offline multiplayer play with the Joy-Con controllers. There’s also single-player and even an online mode to face off other players. Multiple game modes like FIFA Ultimate Team have you creating and unlocking new characters for your fantasy soccer team, as well as in-depth Career Mode to advance to a championship and local seasons. Any kid who wants a thorough sports game experience and loves soccer will love FIFA 18.
BD&A offers a snap-on folio that covers the display when not in use and gives the Switch a few more options when in its kickstand mode for portable gameplay. If you plan to travel a lot with your Switch, this $24 accessory is perfect for keeping it safe.
Got a Switch? If so, you’ll need Super Mario Odyssey stat. Alongside Zelda, it’s one of the absolute best reasons to have the handheld. In fact, if you don’t have the Switch, we advise running out and buying one with both of those games right now. Go on, we’ll wait.
Before we jump in, a quick word on criteria. The primary question this top 25 list is intended to answer is simple: “What are the 25 best games we played on this platform?” How much fun we had with the games is obviously our primary concern, but we also considered elements like longevity/staying power, influence, and innovation. Also, this list consists of games released before November 1, 2017.
With the Nintendo Switch, where you play Super Mario Odyssey and Splatoon 2 is up to you. That freedom puts your console at risk. The more you carry it, the more opportunities you have to drop it and break its screen. Even if you don’t break its display, expect scratches to appear if you don’t cover your device in the best Nintendo Switch cases and the best Nintendo Switch screen protectors you can buy. Even the Joy-Cons need protection. The motion sensors in these $49.99 controllers could break after one drop without any protection.
Super Meat Boy has been a sensation ever since it launched way back in 2010. Requiring unparalleled reflexes, superlative precision and the patience of a saint to overcome its incredible challenge, this is high-level 2D platforming at its finest.

Bicker about what makes up a “core” Mario game all you want. All I know is that Super Mario Odyssey is one of the two or three best games to ever have that lovable little guy’s name in the title. It is every bit as powerful as Super Mario Galaxy or Super Mario Bros. 3, the previous high-water marks for Nintendo’s mascot, and for the platformer genre in general. Odyssey is an overwhelming cornucopia of pure joy, full of the kind of freedom typically found in open world games but with a constant chain of clear objectives and attainable goals pulling you ever deeper into its roster of candy-colored kingdoms. It’s a perfect bookmark to Nintendo’s other major Switch game of 2017, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild: both recraft a classic cornerstone of the entire medium into an effortlessly enjoyable and crucially contemporary masterpiece that unites all eras of gaming history.
