Why should you buy it? If you haven’t played Night in the Woods yet, the fact it’s now on Switch means you literally have no excuse now. It’s high on the list of best indie games of 2017, and although it might look like a cutesy adventure of cats, foxes and crocodiles in a colourful world, it’s actually far darker than that. The story flows with sub-currents of mental health issues, concerns about identity and failure, death, mourning, love and all kinds of growing up pains, and it’s all utterly brilliant. You play as Mae, as she works out how to come home after dropping out of college to a town that’s not quite the same anymore, and is full of her past – both good and bad. Rhythm action, platforming and other gameplay tropes are all roped into telling Mae’s story, and thanks to the fact it comes free with the Weird Autumn DLC, the Switch port is the best way to experience her journey. Just be prepared, the scariest monster in the dark woods is you.
Polygon’s sister site The Verge reported that the Asus Mixed Reality headset is now available for pre-order in the US. At $429, it’s definitely on the more expensive end of Windows’ VR offerings, but it does come with two motion controllers which offsets the price a little.

It may even inspire you to ditch the Pot Noodles in favour of some home-cooked grub IRL.

Otherworldly and endearing, Celeste follows a pixel-art character on a journey up a mountain, encouraging you through its fiendish, treacherous areas with affirmations and optimism. This charming curiosity turns the always-dull world of golf into a top-notch role-playing game. It’s pretty much just what that sounds like: “battles” are golf matches instead of fights, you earn experience points and money that can be used to improve your golf game, etc. It’s not just the novelty of the concept or the classic videogame golf action that makes us recommend this one, but the smart, funny script, which features some of the best writing in games this year.

To keep it at a manageable number, we’ve had to kick some games we love to the curb, but you should totally still go and find them and play them – we’ve included past entrants in a tidy list at the end too.
You can also bite the bullet and pick up a system from the gray market; the Nintendo Switch seems to be going for around $450 from third-party sellers on sites like Amazon. Prices on eBay also seem to be hovering around $450 or so for the system itself.

For all the nostalgia-driven indie gaming experiences we’ve had over the past decade, the long-running and much-loved world of Harvest Moon had gone curiously neglected until more recently. Stardew Valley is easily the best of these virtual farming love-letters, making vast improvements on core mechanics while adding its own unique flavor. It’s faithful enough that devoted Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons fans fell in love with it, but approachable enough that it introduced an entirely new group of gamers to the joys of a pixellated country life.—Janine Hawkins

Price: It is a factor to consider in almost every product including the Nintendo game. Well, a hugely priced Nintendo switch game may mean it has numerous features. However, this should not be a general notion, as most products do not reflect the real term of “you get what you pay for”. Try to go for a product that is neither too expensive nor too cheap.
