Another good one from Nintendo Switch! The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ is a randomly generated action-shooter that features rogue-like elements and heavy RPG. In this game, all you need to do is to follow Isaac on his journey to find bizarre treasures that change his form and give him supernatural powers for fighting off droves of mysterious creatures. As a player, you need to discover these secrets and fight the Isaac way to safety.
So whether you’ve just grabbed the Switch and need a few pointers, or are you just looking for something new to play after conquering Zelda, you’ll find plenty of inspiration in our list of the 20 best games the Switch has to offer.
Also, unlike some other cases, the Hori Tough Pouch strikes a gentle balance between protection and convenience. Because you only put your Switch into it when you’re done playing, it doesn’t change how you grip the console or its Joy-Con controllers.
The “good” news is that there aren’t many games worth buying at the launch of the Switch. The one game everyone will be talking about, “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,” is a true delight. It’s also $60.
At times it’s hard to believe something like this is running on Nintendo’s portable console as you climb vast mountains and trawl through dark industrial cities. It’s one of Monolith Soft’s finest efforts yet, and feels right at home on Switch.
If you’ve ever played a Harvest Moon game, you’re already familiar with the premise of Stardew Valley. Stardew Valley is an addictive farming simulator which sees you interact with townees to the point where you can literally marry them.
“Thank you so much for the service you provide, I’ve been crying myself to sleep every night because destiny is pretty much sold out everywhere. Thanks to you guys, the river has stopped flowing and I has Destiny.” -J Nasty
What memory cards does the Nintendo Switch need? Those will be Micro SD cards also known as, depending on their size, as MicroSDHC (up to 32GB) or MicroSDXC (up to a huge 2TB soon). Nintendo will be releasing their own branded cards, but you’ll be paying more, just for a label. So for now, we’d take a look at this range of cheap MicroSDXC Nintendo Switch-friendly cards.
And this is easily the best portable edition to date, not only packing in huge worlds on the Switch’s capable screen, but also giving you the full range of controls, featuring eight-player online antics, and bundling in a superb set of Super Mario-themed blocks and skins.
The huge open world provides players with endless hours of play and exploration. The graphics are gorgeous and the world is intricately designed so it never ceases to be interesting. True to the franchise, players will encounter plenty of challenging puzzles and easter eggs along their journey.
Nintendo has capitalized on the fact that many people want to play good games with real controllers on the go. You could recreate the same thing on a phone by buy some unknown brand of bluetooth controller but for the average person, that is way to complicated and frustrating. For the money, this is an extremely capable machine. People complain about the price but when you consider the cost of the controllers that are included, it’s comparable to buying a super powerful tablet with a lower resolution screen. It’s not overpriced at all really. As for overpriced, I can’t say the same about the indie games – they are good but you’ll pay way more for these types of games on the switch then you would on Steam. It really hurts to pay 33 dollars for something like Shovel Night Treasure Chest – but on the other hand, I can’t carry my gaming tower and monitor onto the train to play it. By the way, Zelda is perhaps a “perfect” game. I’m more of a fallout/GTA5 fan at home and I’ve never played a Zelda game before, but wow, Breath of the Wild is fun to play. I play it mostly in portable mode and it’s great on the small screen. So in summary, the switch is totally worth the money and you won’t be disappointing with the screen (for gaming) or the build quality. You will need to be cautious about what games you buy because some of the games being peddled on the store are not worth what is being charged. Check out as many reviews online before buying anything besides Nintendo titles – for example you will discover that shovel night is worth it – others are not.
Why should you buy it? It’s not often that you have a blind protagonist in a game, but that’s exactly what Perception has done. You play as a young girl called Cassie, who’s trying to explain her nightmares by exploring a rather sinister mansion using echolocation and a useful text-to-speech app. As you solve the mansion’s various mysteries, it transforms and presents even more to uncover. Its narrative constantly keeps you feeling tense as you play, and despite the fact your playable character is blind, the experience is very visual. Put on some headphones and immerse yourself in this excellent psychological thriller ASAP.
Ubisoft’s Rabbids come toe-to-toe with Mario, Luigi, Peach and Yoshi in this turn-based title. Take a team of three through the Mushroom Kingdom and beat back the Rabbid invasion. This game takes familiar faces, mixes in some Rabbid-flavoured chaos and wraps it all up in XCOM-style gameplay that’ll have even hardened gamers hooked. Balance weapons, tactics, special abilities and status effects. Earn coins and skill orbs to upgrade your kit and build an unbeatable team.
Following closely behind Breath of the Wild is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which stands at 4.42 million copies. The colorful online shooter Splatoon 2 is third with 3.61 million copies sold, while 1-2-Switch and Arms round out the top five at 1.37 and 1.35 million units, respectively. All of these figures combine physical and digital game sales, as well as those included in console bundles.
Stardew Valley isn’t just one thing; it’s a whole bunch of things at once. You can engage in crafting, fishing, cooking and even exploring procedurally-generated caves to mine for items and even take on monstrous enemies.
It would be hard to imagine running into a gamer who hasn’t played or at the very least, heard of Super Meat Boy. The video game was a massive success and a highly addicting and challenging platform title by indie developers Team Meat.
Why should you buy it? Thumper might initially remind you of something a little gentler like Audiosurf as you glide down slick, stylised pathways with electronica in your ears but don’t be deceived, this aural extravaganza requires a calm head and pitch perfect twitch reflexes. Initially your giant bug just requires a tap of A as you go over a light panel or perhaps holding a button as you crash around corners but before long you’re tapping, flying, crashing down onto the track and causing tidal waves to destroy enormous floating heads… and that’s only the beginning. Utterly unforgiving with a soundtrack that you can’t pump into you head loud enough, Thumper is a treat for the senses and potentially RSI inducing for your thumbs.
What if you want to keep playing? The sad news is, out of the box, there’s no way to play the Switch on your TV while simultaneously charging the Joy-Con. You could slide the Joy-Con onto the Switch tablet and play the console as a handheld, which will charge the controllers, but what if you want to play it on the TV?
A gentle farming role-playing game that begins with someone chucking in their corporate cubicle job to run away to the country and live off the land. Stardew Valley is unquestionably the best value indie game on Switch: a full farming year lasts 20 hours and you can continue playing it pretty much indefinitely. Beware: during quiet moments at work, you may find yourself hiding in the toilets in order to harvest virtual strawberries.
I know, you could just get a Pro Controller instead of dropping another $79 on these, but I think it’s a better investment to get a second pair of Joy-Cons because you can split them into four controllers for epic multiplayer games.
Toy industry insiders agree these will be one of the top consoles for 2017. Stock levels are expected to fluctuate. Pre-orders launched in January 2017 and sellouts occurred within moments, much the same as it was with the NES Classic Edition Mini Console.
Minecraft features two gameplay options: Survival and Creative Mode. Kids who play Survival Mode will have to mine deep for resources and building materials and will be forced to fend off giant spiders, skeletons, zombies and other mobs of enemies when the sun sets. Creative Mode offers a more relaxed way of playing, giving infinite resources for players to build whatever they want on their own time at their own pace. The game also a multiplayer mode, so kids and their friends or parents can join in on building something together.
The Disgaea series has been around for more than ten years now, and has continuously delivered fantastic unique strategy JRPG gameplay. It’s delightfully absurd at times, with its exploding penguins and crass dialogue, but that’s what makes the series so memorable. Disgaea V is the most recent, and most complete, version of Disgaea you can get, and the Switch’s portability works incredibly well with the turn-based play. It also has a ridiculous amount of things to do, too, so it’s well worth a look for RPG fans – especially if you love customizing the crap out of literally everything. – Casey DeFreitas
Ideal for all ages The game takes a long time to load from when you start up the game to the start menu. But this can be avoided by loading the game up beforehand when you get into the game world and leaving it in sleep mode.
Waterfield’s answer to the game case is an exquisite example of how you can look like a grown-up, but play like a kid. The Arcade Gaming Case is a beautiful designer bag made of full-grain leather (let me tell you, this leather feels so nice!) with a soft plush lining. It’s big enough to fit your Switch tablet (with the Joy-Cons detatched), a Hori Compact PlayStand, your Joy-Cons, all your necessary cables, and more. I managed to fit all of the above, plus my Mophie Powerstation XXL (which is a monolith itself) comfortably. It looks so good over your shoulder like a satchel, but also carries around briefcase style thanks to the leather handle on top.
Some Nintendo Switch are well-suited for passing the time during a quick commute to work. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is not one of those games: It’s best enjoyed when you have a substantial block of time to sink away into the game, allowing you to get lost in its sprawling world. The latest RPG entry from Monolith Soft and Nintendo follows a scavenger names Rex and his sentient weapon Pyra, as they traverse massive, living landmasses known as Titans. It’s a vast, absurd yet astonishing world that’s bound to please those who are always looking for new areas to explore.
One of the core benefits of the Nintendo Switch is that it’s a portable system. Of course, that means you’ll be battling against that most formidable of enemies – battery life. The Antank Portable Switch Battery case offers 6500mAh of additional charging power, which more than doubles your on-the-go play time without adding an overly significant amount of bulk or weight. It strikes the right balance between battery capacity and portability. Also, this case has enough durability that it will add in some extra protection for your Switch.
This Nintendo Switch bundle comes with a carry case that is ideal if you’re taking the Switch out of the home and it has space for game cartridges and accessories too. You’re also getting a play stand which will make it easier putting the console in a viewable position wherever you are. View this bundle at Amazon.
Play your games wherever. Sounds like an easy thing to ignore, but trust me you will get used to it fast and love the fact that you can play while waiting for that lazagna you just put in the oven. At a picnic? Play Switch with your family. Fishing? Play at your own risk – but it’s possible. On a plane? Go ahead! In bed? That’s right. There isn’t an infinite library of games at the moment, but there are already good enough games that will keep you busy as newer titles arrive. Zelda is an obvious choice, but check out Shovel Knight, Fast RMX and Snake Pass on the eShop. Mario Kart is also right around the corner! Battery is fair for a device of this caliber. WiFi signal is strange, though… get an ethernet to USB adapter for online gaming when docked. You may have one from the Wii and Wii U era. I have a gaming PC but haven’t turned it on much since Switch release day. It’s amazing. I highly recommend it the console!
It’s not the usual Nintendo game, but The Binding of Isaac is a platformer that older gamers will love to play on the big screen or on the go. Throw in this accessory pack and you’ve got a Nintendo Switch bundle that gets you a neat saving of just under £40.
Nintendo Switch is a gaming console that gives you the portability of a handheld device with the power of a home gaming system. At home, Nintendo Switch rests in the Nintendo Switch Dock that connects the system to your TV and lets you play with family and friends in the comfort of your living room. By simply lifting Nintendo Switch from the dock, the system will instantly transition to portable mode, and the same great gaming experience that was being enjoyed at home can travel with you wherever you go. The mobility of Nintendo Switch is enhanced by its bright high-definition display.
